Way back in December 2001, Trainz "Community Edition" was released to a small core group of 1,000 fans, many of whom had been following development progress for the past year online.
"Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" had just been released in the cinema, Enron filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, Nintendo GameCube was selling like hotcakes and Microsoft Xbox had just been introduced.
In technology, NVIDIA becomes the fastest semiconductor company to hit $1B in revenue and their GeForce3 GPU named one of the most innovative products of 2001 by Computer Graphics World magazine.
And in the train sim world, the computer required to run an awesome new "Trainz Simulator" product from new kids on the block "Auran", was as follows:
16Mb video card (TNT2 equiv.)
Direct X 8.1 or higher
Direct X compatible sound card
56K Modem for Internet access
A comparison to today's latest hardware shows that PCs are roughly 10,000 times faster than they were back in 2001!
The first thing you will probably notice if you grab the FREE download of Original Trainz is how quickly Trainz V1.1 downloads and installs today. The 500MB download was enormous at the time Trainz was launched and would have taken at least 2 days on a 26K dial-up modem.
Upon starting Trainz, there were 3 options from the main menu:
The big difference from here was that you first selected your "Consist"...
Then selected your "Terrain" and placed your consists on one of a selection of pre-defined points on the track..
Then load up your "Terrain' and you're ready to drive with the "DCC" controller - Mark I.
So that's where it all started... and you can experience this version for yourself right now ... just read on.
Many of you may have experienced Trainz Version 1.1 at some point in time, but how long since you actually loaded it up and took a trip down memory lane?
Right now, and for the next 15 days, you can download the full Trainz V1.1 version (download size: 488MB) for free and relive those memories from 15 years ago (or perhaps experience what it was like when Trainz was just beginning).
It is amazing to see just how far we have come in the past 15 years!
If you don't want to try out the original version in full, you can still download one the original routes right from the Trainz Download Station.
