TANE, as our next-generation Trainz product is affectionately known, reaches 2 years old this week (so many milestones achieved!). This article covers just some of the highlights...
Of course if you have missed the announcement elsewhere, we have also delivered the opportunity for fans to experience TANE for just $4.00. Click the image below to find out more...
During Kickstarter, we decided to provide our supporters with a look at how far we have come in the preceding year with the announcement for the then-soon-to-be-released Community Edition:
We’re happy to announce that starting in December, if you’ve pre-ordered with Simulator Central or pledged via Kickstarter, you’ll receive access to Trainz: A New Era Community Edition – a specially made early access version. This allows us to deliver the best possible Trainz experience, and lets you, the community, have an early in-depth look at what Trainz: A New Era will be.
The Community Edition is a full working edition of Trainz: A New Era available to you while we put the final bug fixing, polish, and optimisations together, and will update fully to the full release of Trainz: A New Era in early 2015. More information will be available as we get closer to December 2014.
We'd spent the past 10+ years making Trainz better than last year's edition, and this trend has continued since CE. We spent the majority of the next two years removing any doubt about our commitment to complete the task we set out to achieve. As 2016 draws to a close, the core group of "TANE" fans is growing ever larger.
The big milestone for the CE release was that it heralded the first release of Trainz to use brand new technology since the very first edition of Trainz in 2001. Although the old Auran Jet engine had been modified and upgraded the whole concept with "The New Era" was that we needed to completely re-engineer the engine from the ground up to take advantage of multi-core processors and the latest graphics shaders.
In early 2015, when we recognized we'd need more time to complete the objectives we set, even with the delay from the initial December release. We therefore released this Development Timeline to give people an idea of where we had been, and where we were heading...
Check out this Timeline link for the full, detailed webpage.
By May 2015 we were ready for the official launch (or as ready as our funding options would allow). Well known blogger "Squirrel" released this video soon after release...
Brad (one of our in house guys) may have helped with some parts of the production of this video ;)
While the official release was back in May 2015, there have been 7 updates since:
You will see looking through the changelists for each update that TANE has made major leaps forward with new functionality, optimisations and bug fixes at every stage. That's two years of free updates and while some would say that's the way it should be, it also means that N3V are restricted in their efforts to expand the team and ramp up production to produce more features and more updates more quickly.
The good news is that we have also been working behind the scenes on future projects, and we're getting closer to being able to really showcase where Trainz is heading...but that story is not ready to be told today :)
